The Young Firefighters Scheme has existed in various formats throughout the country for many years. Its aim is to enable young people between the ages of 13 and 17 to join a uniformed organisation based on the ethos of the fire service.
The main aims of the scheme are:
• To aid personal development physically, mentally and socially
• To help to develop discipline, social conscience and community awareness
• To promote leadership qualities and team skills
During the course of their time as a Young Firefighter, individuals will learn many varied skills such as hose and ladder operation, first aid, health and safety and many other proficiencies associated with firefighters. The aim is to give the Young Firefighters as real as an experience as possible of the day to day role of a firefighter whilst achieving this in a safe environment.
Young Firefighters will also complete community safety projects which will improve the safety of the local community in which they live. The skills learnt in the Young Firefighters scheme will nurture not only young adults with adeptness suited for a career in the fire service but for many other career opportunities.
