Tuesday, 29 May sees the launch of the Firestoppers telephone number and online form, the first of its kind in the UK.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) has joined forces with independent charity Crimestoppers to launch this new service in the Easington area of Durham.
Firestoppers deals with any type of deliberate fire; however, its main targets are vehicles, houses and commercial building and sheds. It is there for members of the community to feed in any information or concerns about arson in their area.
Like Crimestoppers, Firestoppers gives people the power to speak up and stop arson, 100% anonymously.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dominic Brown said: “We are proud to be the first area in the UK to benefit from a dedicated Firestoppers telephone number.
“The idea of a dedicated line for those to report information about deliberate fire setting in their area, came to us when we were developing our Enough is Enough campaign aimed at driving down arson in the Easington area.
“We took this idea to Crimestoppers who loved it and the last few weeks has seen us working closely together to introduce the first ever Firestoppers telephone line in the UK.
“Over the past few months we have seen a significant rise in arson in this area of the county and the introduction of Firestoppers is another tactic in our fight to reduce this type of criminality.
“I hope the community in Easington and the surrounding areas take the opportunity to use it to report concerns and feed in information about what’s going on and contributing to these fires in their local community.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to work together to stamp out arson and make the east coast safer for everyone.”
The Firestoppers telephone number is 0800 169 5558 and the online form is at forms.theiline.co.uk/firestoppers
