Here are our "Twelve Days of Fire Safety" tips to stay safe from fire this Christmas

On the first day of Christmas ensure you have working smoke alarms installed on all levels of your home. Check the battery on your alarm weekly and use Christmas as a reminder to clean it and remove dust.

On the second day of Christmas check your Christmas tree lights conform to the British Safety Standard.

On the third day of Christmas never overload electrical sockets. Take special care with Christmas lights. Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them when you go to bed. Use an RCD (residual current device) on outdoor lights.

On the fourth day of Christmas do not attach decorations to lights or heaters as they can burn easily.

On the fifth day of Christmas never place candles near to your Christmas tree or furnishings. Do not leave them burning unattended.

On the sixth day of Christmas take care in the kitchen; 60 per cent of fires in the home begin in the kitchen. Never leave a cooker unattended.

On the seventh day of Christmas celebrate safely; the risk of accidents, especially in the kitchen is much greater after alcohol has been consumed.

On the eighth day of Christmas make sure that your family and friends visiting at Christmas know what to do in an emergency. Make a fire escape plan for your home.

On the ninth day of Christmas make sure that cigarettes are extinguished completely before going to bed.

On the tenth day of Christmas keep candles, lighters and matches out of reach of children.

On the eleventh day of Christmas if you're celebrating with fireworks, store them in a metal box, read the instructions, never go back to a lit firework and keep water nearby.

On the twelfth day of Christmas take the time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours and make sure they are safe this festive season.
