Newcastle dad Jordan is determined to make his son proud as he embarks on a new career as a Firefighter.

The 28-year-old from Seaton Burn is one of 10 new recruits training to become Wholetime Firefighters with our Service (since September 2024).

Jordan spent a decade working as an electrician before deciding to join us and hopes his new role will inspire his seven-year-old son, Jacob, (pictured right) who has autism and ADHD.

“My son loves that I am training to be a Firefighter,” Jordan said.

“I wanted a job where that would make him proud.

“That was one of the motivational factors for me - I want to do well for him.

“My son’s diagnosis has enabled me to become more resilient and patient, which has helped on the course.”

Jordan is now five weeks into the intensive course and is putting his learning into practice with practical Breathing Apparatus (BA) and Road Traffic Collision (RTC) training exercises.

“I always fancied being a Firefighter,” he said.

“I always like to help people and wanted a career where I could do home and feel that I have done something worthwhile.

“Everyone said it is going to be hard and it is, but it is also enjoyable and I am learning every day.”

Jordan said he loves the physical side of the role and urged anyone thinking about joining the Service to ensure they prioritise their fitness.

“Make sure that you are as fit as possible,” Jordan said.

“Keep applying, even if you don’t get in the first time.

“Do your homework on the Service and keep a positive mindset.”

Outside of work, Jordan enjoys spending quality time with his son and fiancé, Sophie Hedley, as well as pursuing hobbies including MMA and fishing.
