Young Person Education Co-ordinator Sarah Kinghorn.
Former police officer Sarah Kinghorn is on a mission to inspire the next generation in her new role with our Service.
The mum-of-two joins us after spending 15 years with Durham Constabulary where she was a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) and, most recently, a police officer.
During her time in the police, Sarah has worked closely with our firefighters in Peterlee and Seaham so felt that joining the fire service was a natural step.
“I have always worked in uniform and had structure in my career,” Sarah said.
“During my police days, I met a lot of the crews in Peterlee and Seaham, so when I saw the job advertised with the Service, I thought I could link in quite easily with them.
“I have done a lot of community and youth work as part of the police, so the role felt like something that I have already done but I will just be in a different uniform!”
As our new Young Person Education Co-ordinator, Sarah will be working with community groups and young people to deliver education around fire safety and key prevention messages to tackle deliberate fires.
She will also be working to improve the delivery of our Fire Cadet programme.
The 38-year-old from Peterlee said she was “excited” to get stuck into her new role and hopes to make a real difference in the community.
“I have a lot of experience and contacts and I think from a fire service point of view, that will be really useful.
“I am excited about the new challenge.”
Outside of work, Sarah enjoys spending time with her children and walking her dog, Marshall, who was named after the fire service dog from Paw Patrol!
