A North East Fire Service’s ongoing dedication to supporting the armed forces has been recognised with a prestigious award for a second time.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service’s (CDDFRS) outstanding support to the armed forces community was recognised once more with an Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award.

Established by the Ministry of Defence, the scheme was designed to acknowledge, publicly thank and honour employers that provide exceptional support to the armed forces community and defence by going above and beyond their pledges, as part of the Armed Forces Covenant.

The Service was previously given the award, which is valid for a period of five years, for the first time in 2019.

Delighted to continue to hold the award, CDDFRS Chief Fire Officer Steve Helps said: “I am delighted that our Service has received this Gold Award for a second time.

“A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes to ensure we have the most supportive HR policies in place for reservists, veterans and the spouses and partners of those serving in the Armed Forces.”

He added: “Many of our exceptional firefighters and staff started their careers in the armed services.

“We therefore know that the transition of leaving the armed services can feel daunting and that’s why we’re committed to being the most supportive and informed employers we can be.

"We would like to encourage other employers to take the pledge, help make a difference and inspire others to do the same."

As well as introducing the most supportive HR policies, the Service also provides 10 extra paid days leave for reservists.

The North of England Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association Director of Engagement, Robin Bolton, added: “I am delighted that County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service have revalidated their well-deserved Gold Award this year.

“They continue to employ a strong cohort of reservists and veterans and clearly value the many transferable skills that military people bring to the world of firefighting: Long may this continue!”
